Thanks to support from Casey Family Programs, five donations of $21,000 each were given to organizations that have supported community recovery efforts after the impacts of hurricanes Irma and María. The FCPR invited the Department of the Family to provide the names of some of the organizations with whom they have collaborated in the past and jointly evaluate them along with other organizations that FCPR had previously identified.

“It has been a true collaborative effort whereas after a rigorous evaluation these five organizations have been selected because of their relentless and continuing efforts in serving the community, either through house repairs, offering furnishings, clothing, toiletries, food and even psychological services. These are community’s first responders, they know what is needed in the community and how to deliver it,” said Mary Ann Gabino, senior vice-president of FCPR.

The organizations that received the donations are: Programa de Educación Comunal de Entrega y Servicio, (P.E.C.E.S., Inc.), Hogar Forjadores de Esperanza, Centro Sor Isolina Ferré, Institute for Individual, Group and Organizational Development and Centro de Servicios Comunitarios Vida Plena. These organizations cover several municipalities and regions in Puerto Rico, many of which were severely impacted, such as Humacao, East Region, San Juan, Ponce and Gurabo.

After hurricanes Irma and María, FCPR activated its Community Recovery Fund for Puerto Rico, which became a trusted site for donors – foundations, corporations and individuals in the United States – providing funds to support Puerto Rico. FCPR’s immediate response was to provide donations to community-based organizations so that they can meet the community’s most pressing needs.

Casey Family Programs works in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and two territories and with more than a dozen tribal nations to influence long-lasting improvements to the safety and success of children, families and the communities where they live. Founded in 1966, we learn from and collaborate with communities at local, state, tribal and national levels to nurture the safety and success of every child.

«Casey has carried out a collaborative relationship with the Department of the Family for almost eight years and for us it was very important to be able to respond to what happened on the Island after the passage of Hurricane María, especially the impact it had on the most vulnerable families whose well-being is the focus of our collaboration. We wanted to be able to contribute to the Department’s recovery and support the efforts. We also appreciate the response of the Puerto Rico Community Foundation because they were the first ones we thought of to make this donation, due to its great reputation and knowledge of the needs of families in Puerto Rico. We are very grateful to the Community Foundation for collaborating in the distribution of these funds,» said Jorge Cabrera, senior director of Casey Family Programs.

The Department of the Family works annually with approximately 50 community-based organizations. The agency has 3,468 minors in its custody and provides services to more than 3,411 older adults. After the hurricanes, these organizations became an extension of the department to serve the different vulnerable populations. «Providing the necessary tools to the families that shape these communities, so that they can respond in a coordinated manner to a disaster, is fundamental to a solid recovery. The resources that are delivered today strengthen and expand the scope of the services that these community organizations offer to our families,» said Glorimar Andújar, secretary of the Department of the Family.

The Secretary added that «supporting projects that promote community self-management is one of the main frames of social mobility and is part of Governor Ricardo Rosselló’s public policy. Assisting our families in this recovery period remains one of the most urgent issues. Coordination and communication among organizations allowed thousands of families to be helped. In each community we visited after the hurricanes hits, a model of solidarity and community assistance was replicated, a model that we want to continue supporting throughout Puerto Rico. Social alliances proved to be the most effective way to meet our people’s needs”

*

FCPR is a non-profit entity with over 32 years of experience in advising individuals, families, corporations and foundations inside and outside the island in channeling their philanthropic interests. This consulting seeks that donor contributions have an impact on the self-determination of Puerto Ricans. Furthermore, FCPR has a programmatic component with annual projects to support the most pressing needs in our communities.
