{"id":5720,"date":"2019-04-08T16:12:36","date_gmt":"2019-04-08T16:12:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fcpr.org\/?p=5720"},"modified":"2019-04-08T16:13:01","modified_gmt":"2019-04-08T16:13:01","slug":"comunidad-solar-toro-negro-recibe-visita-del-congresista-grijalva","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fcpr.org\/en\/comunidad-solar-toro-negro-recibe-visita-del-congresista-grijalva\/","title":{"rendered":"Toro Negro Solar Community receives visit from Congressman Grijalva"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Thanks to the philanthropic efforts of Fundaci\u00f3n Comunitaria de Puerto Rico, the Toro Negro community in Ciale is emerging as a model of energy independence and making its mark on the world.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>CIALES,<\/strong> March 16, 2019 | The Community <strong>Black Bull<\/strong> received a\nvisit from representatives of the U.S. Government\u2019s\nNatural Resources Committee. Led by Congressman Ra\u00fal Grijalva, the visit was\npart of a series of meetings the group is holding to learn\nfirsthand about the island\u2019s current situation, providing the\nToro Negro community in Ciales the opportunity to present the energy self-sufficiency\nmodel developed in collaboration with Fundaci\u00f3n Comunitaria de Puerto Rico (FCPR)\nand Somos Solar. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the community tour, the group of congress members was able to appreciate the energy infrastructure by visiting several important sites. They were able to appreciate the great pride of the community and their full understanding of the newly created infrastructure and the ongoing processes. They brought to the group's attention the importance of the community actively participating in the design and construction of the system. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is important that we take on shared risks\u2014\nboth at the local and federal levels\u2014so that, together with philanthropic investment,\nwe can continue to promote energy communities,\u201c said the\npresident of FCPR, Dr. Nelson I. Col\u00f3n Tarrats. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The visit serves to\nraise the profile of the self-management project, which has already been featured in the media\nin Puerto Rico and the United States and has earned them recognition as\nfinalists in the <em>Microgrid Greater Good Awards\n2019, event <\/em>will take place during the <em>Microgrid 2019: Shaping the New Electric Grid, <\/em>From May 14th to 16th in San Diego, California, Opportunity presents Black Bull as an important model in the world of microgrids globally. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis project is managed, administered, and handled by the Toro Negro community. The community built the underground infrastructure, which imparts a greater sense of ownership in what we have built,\u201d stated the president of the Toro Negro Community, Jos\u00e9 \u201cTito\" Figueroa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project involved\napproximately 4 months of infrastructure development and comprises 20 microgrids,\nwhich make up the solar community that provides power to 28 homes in the\ncommunity. With an 83 KWPV system and 116 KWH of battery storage, the community is\nan example of what can be achieved with determination and the support of\nphilanthropic organizations such as Comunitaria de Puerto Rico and Somos Solar,\nas well as other institutions like Para La Naturaleza and Duke University. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Congressman Grijalva stated, \u201cThis is an important model that we wanted to see and understand. The most important thing is the community and its pride in what they have built.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>About the\nFCPR:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The\nFCPR is a nonprofit organization that, for more than 32 years, has\nadvised individuals, families, corporations, and foundations both on and off\nthe island on how to channel their philanthropic efforts. The goal of this guidance is\nto ensure that donors\u2019 contributions have an impact on the self-development of\nPuerto Ricans. In addition, FCPR has a program area dedicated to annual projects\nthat address the current needs of our communities.
