Initially, the Fund was established in 2019 to support the studies of Afro-descendant youth from Loíza and was called the Benito Massó Scholarship Fund for Loíza Youth. Now, the Fund expands its scope with the extension of the scholarship to all of Puerto Rico, although it will continue to allocate a portion of the funds to students from Loíza.
