Puerto Rico Community Foundation launches the initiative «Water for Us»
«Water for Us» is one of the Puerto Rico Community Foundation’s (PRCF) initiatives to promote community recovery. The initiative, which began this past Monday, will provide access to drinking water to primary health centers, community organizations, and senior centers. With a budget allocation of $175,000, the initiative plans to deliver 40 water purifiers in the first phase. The Berkey Water purifier, runs without electricity and its system has 8 purification elements, imperceptible to the user. It can generate up to 6,000 gallons of water before the first filter replacement.
«We have had a lot of walk-in organizations, and most of them mentioned the lack of water. We could have provided bottled water, but that would have been a temporary measure. Instead, we are providing a mechanism that will allow them to have water now and in the future for them and their communities,« said Dr. Nelson I. Colón Tarrats, executive president of the Institution.
This purification system is safe and reliable, and we will be taking it to various places, from Humacao to Aguada and from Yauco to San Juan. The goal is to have between one and five purifiers in every municipality.
«Water for Us» is one of the initiatives supported by the Puerto Rico Community Recovery Fund. The organization has already awarded more than $1,250,000 to nonprofit organizations throughout Puerto Rico.
Currently, there are about 15 organizations that have the system in towns such as Aguada, Ponce, San Juan, Adjuntas, Lares, Loíza, Naranjito, and Corozal. We will soon be expanding to other municipalities.
