After Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico, many students lost everything. Faced with this reality, the president of the Puerto Rico Teachers Association (AMPR), Aida Díaz, and the executive president of the Puerto Rico Community Foundation, Dr. Nelson Colón Tarrats decided to join forces to support students around Puerto Rico.

“In the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, our organization was activated to provide immediate relief. We delivered supplies, water filters, we have given financial assistance to our associate, active and retired teachers who were severely affected. But also, our children have suffered in this emergency. Many lost their school bags because of the floods, and that worried us a lot. That is why we looked for a way to solve this lack of materials. The backpacks we are delivering today, along with school supplies, are a further demonstration of our commitment to education and to the country. No child should go to school without the materials that support their education”, explained Diaz.

For Colón Tarrats, it is of utmost importance to support all efforts, especially when it comes to the educational formation of our Puerto Rican students.

“The education of our children and youth has always been a strategic priority area for the Puerto Rico Community Foundation. With the school supplies and backpacks we will be delivering, our students will be ready for the new school semester. The collaboration with the Puerto Rico Teachers Association allows us to maximize the reach of this initiative,” mentioned the Executive President.

The distribution of school supplies will begin next week (January 15-19) and among the items that students will receive will be: backpacks, notebooks, glue, scissors and others.

The delivery took place several weeks ago at the Jaime Rosario Baez School.
