With great joy, last week we celebrated the awarding of scholarships from the Moreno Fernández Fund to Adriel Montañez Medina, piano student, and Yey L. Mulero Rivera, classical viola student, both from Conservatory of Music of Puerto Rico.

During the meeting, they had the opportunity to share with the representative of the fund, Sonia Moreno, sister of the donor, María Luisa Moreno Fernández; her Carmen “Luisita” Fernández; the president of the Puerto Rico Community Foundation (PRCF), Dr. Nelson I. Colón Tarrats; and the associate dean of Academic and Student Affairs of the Conservatory, Ernesto V. Ramos Vázquez.

The Fund awards scholarships to students of the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music and instrumental performance who are interested in having an intensive summer study experience at an institution outside of Puerto Rico.

Pianist and teacher Moreno Fernández, who passed away shortly after establishing the fund, used this philanthropic vehicle to honor her uncle José Arturo (Papo) Fernández, who sponsored her piano lessons until she entered the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music.

“With this action, the seed that was planted in her continued to expand, so that students from Puerto Rico could travel outside the island, so that they could be exposed to the experience and continue to grow,” Sonia explained. “That little seed that started with my uncle Papo Fernandez, is now here, with these students, it continues to grow, and I think that's beautiful,” she adds.

Yey attended Emerald Coast Chamber Music Festival, in Florida, and Adriel will attend in July to Austrian Master Classes, in Austria.

Yey is in his third year and Adriel is in his second year.
