The Toyota Foundation Fund and the Gualasia Scholarship Fund, established at the Puerto Rico Community Foundation (FCPR), offer financial support to students pursuing careers in agriculture and environmental protection. Application deadline: May 31, 2019

San Juan, April 23, 2019 Within the framework of Earth Planet Week celebrations, Puerto Rico Community Foundation (FCPR) announced today the opening of two scholarship calls for university students pursuing studies in professions related to agriculture and environmental protection. The scholarships are funded by Gualasia Scholarship Fund and the Toyota Foundation Environmental Scholarship Program, both established at FCPR.  

These economic opportunities join other large-scale environmental initiatives promoted by the FCPR, guided by its strategic plan, which include access to renewable energy and drinking water, flood control, food security, and coastal protection. The plan's execution is achieved through the promotion of community capitals: financial, environmental, human, physical, social, and cultural. 

The Background Gualasia Scholarships Since 2017, it has provided supplementary financial support to students from Jayuya pursuing university studies at an accredited educational institution in or outside of Puerto Rico, whether at the undergraduate or graduate level. Their studies must be related to agriculture – agricultural sciences, agronomy, agricultural genetics, and biotechnology, among others. They must also demonstrate financial need, satisfactory academic achievement, leadership, and an interest in community development. To participate, students must submit their application on or before May 31.

Meanwhile, the Toyota Foundation Environmental Scholarship Fund It aims to promote academic development in disciplines that contribute to environmental protection. The scholarship provides supplementary financial support to young people who demonstrate economic need, satisfactory academic achievement, and genuine interest in environmental protection. Since 2005, the fund has supported the careers of 251 students, with total scholarships amounting to $$617,375. Interested parties have until May 31, 2019, to apply. Careers related to this fund include: landscape architecture, anthropology, archaeology, industrial biotechnology, agricultural sciences/agronomy, environmental sciences, marine sciences/oceanography, ecology/forestry, ecotourism, geophysics, geography, geology/earth sciences, horticulture/botany, environmental engineering (civil-chemical-mechanical or electrical), environmental management, meteorology, microbiology, environmental technology, and zoology/wildlife management.
