Area residents will be able to participate in free workshops aimed at developing and executing business ideas.

LUQUILLO, February 25, 2019 | Citizens residing in the northeastern area of Puerto Rico who wish to develop a business idea will have the opportunity to participate in a free business incubation program. The program consists of three cycles, pre-incubation, incubation and certification, and begins on Monday, March 11 at 5:00 p.m., in the Activities Room of the Juan Martin Multidisciplinary Center (former Carolina G. de Veve Elementary School), in Luquillo. The initiative, which seeks to stimulate sustainable economic development and solidarity entrepreneurship in the area, is promoted by the Puerto Rico Community Foundation (FCPR), the Juan Martin Multidisciplinary Cultural Center (CCMJM), the Pro-Northeast Corridor Coalition (CPCEN), Sierra Club of Puerto Rico (SCPR) and the Transdisciplinary Institute of Social Research-Action (ITIAS) of the Department of Social Sciences of the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) in Humacao.

With the financial support granted to the FCPR by the Center for Disaster Philanthrophy (CDP), the organizations joined forces to design and offer the entrepreneurial program that begins on March 11 with a workshop focused on guiding the potential entrepreneur towards pre-incubation. To participate, people from the northeast area who are interested in developing their business idea must register at the following link at Eventbrite.

The business incubation opportunity will offer participants mentoring, counseling and training, services that are not currently offered in the area and usually have an average cost of between $800 to $1,500. People who could benefit from this community microenterprise incubator must be residents of the northeastern part of the island (Luquillo, Fajardo, Río Grande, Ceiba and neighboring towns), of medium and low economic resources, and have a business idea, but do not know how to start it or have already started something and do not know how to take it to the next level.

The CDP granted a donation from the CDP Atlantic Hurricane Season Recovery Fund FCPR to stimulate economic activity through community empowerment. Subsequently, the philanthropic opportunity intersected with similar objectives embraced by CCMJM, CPCEN, SCPR and ITIAS, giving rise to the development of this initiative.

The Centro Cultural Multidisciplinario de Juan Martín is located on PR-940, intersection PR-984, in the Juan Martín neighborhood in Luquillo (next to the ball park).
