The Daguao Social and Cultural Development Committee, Inc.., was activated to protect 70 seniors from the Daguao community in Naguabo from coronavirus infection and to ensure they have adequate nutrition. For this non-profit organization, it is important to offer this service to their community because 40 percent of its residents are seniors, some of whom live alone and others are bedridden.
The effort is possible thanks to a strategic donation from Puerto Rico Community Foundation, whose Community response to Covid-19 It seeks to promote community activation through non-profit organizations to prevent and contain the virus, particularly among the elderly population, a community that is at higher risk of death, according to experts.
Other vulnerable populations are also supported due to the social distancing measures related to Covid-19.
To meet the objective, the FCPR outlined four strategies that guide donations: (1) supporting community health clinics (330 Centers), (2) community organizing efforts to establish geriatric health initiatives in communities, (3) and efforts addressing the needs of the homeless and women, as well as housing and water access initiatives, and promoting community economic activation. The fourth strategy is the development of alliances.
